Bangor - It was an emotional day in Penobscot Superior court as a Bangor man who admitted to killing a homeless man last year was sentenced Friday.
58-year-old Stephen James was sentenced to 20 years behind bars in the Department of Corrections.
James admitted to killing 63-year-old, Clyde "Pudge" Worster, in an area off I-95 known as "The Pines" on April 27th.
Family members of both Worster and James addressed the court Friday, both wanting to let Justic Michaela Murphy understand the kind of men their family members were.
"He was a very caring person, he'd give you the shirt off of his back. He had a family. He had children, he had grandchildren, he had loving parents and brothers and sisters. He was just an overall great guy," said Sharon Pimentel, the younger sister of Worster.
"He went through a rough past, and he lost his two sons while he's been in jail. So he's had it rough," said Samantha Stanley, the daughter of James.
The defense was asking for 7 to 10 years in prison, while the state reccomended 20.
Justice Murphy said James' past history of 9 violent crimes and 9 burglaries contributed to her decision Friday.
It's a decision that both families say they are content with.
"I just got to say my goodbyes and hug him, so that's all I wanted, was to feel him one more time," said Stanley.
"My parents will never have to worry about him being out on the streets again to hurt another person or make another family have to go through what we just had to go through," said Pimentel.
