Employee Free Choice Act Raises Concerns Submitted: 02/19/2009
Maine business leaders held a press conference in Bangor Wednesday to express their concerns about the proposed Employee Free Choice Act.

The EFCA would make it easier for workers to form unions with a simple majority vote among a business’s employees using a “Card Check” system. Maine business leaders are most concerned about this portion of the legislation because they say Card Check would not only put more financial strain on organizations, but it would also eliminate secret ballots among workers. But local labor officials disagree with the fact that employees would lose their rights to a secret ballot. They also say the EFCA needs to pass because more workers should have the ability to unionize.
