EAST MILLINOCKET - Police are investigating the vandalism of the gravesite of an East Millinocket murder victim.
The resting place of Joyce McLain has been defaced by an unknown vandal who smeared a brown substance on her headstone at the Grindstone Road Cemetery in Medway. In addition, a ceramic angel that her mother placed on the stone was destroyed and a cross that was nailed to a power line near the scene of the 16-year-old’s murder, had been torn off. The memorial had not been touched in the 29 years since her death. Joyce’s body was found near the Schenck soccer fields in August of 1980 and no one has ever been arrested. Detectives are not sure if these are random acts of vandalism, but Joyce’s mother feels the acts are targeted towards her, not her daughter.
