Both Sides of Question One Speak Up Submitted: 10/01/2009
Bangor - Faith leaders from the Religiou Coalition for the Freedom to Marry in Maine gathered to endorse No On One Thursday.

Representing 18 faith traditions from across the state, the coalition of active and retired clergy believe all Maine families be treated equally under the law.

Organizers say only marriage equality confers full dignity and respect to loving and committed couples.

"It is an institution that provides for certain rights and protections that cause human society to stand on firmer foundations. I can find no reason as to why tht institution should not be extended to gay and lesbian persons," said Rev. Kent Ulery, the President of Bangor Theological Seminary.

Meanwhile, the campaign for Yes on One, Stand for Marriage Maine, released a statement in regards to Thursday's opposition, saying, " Question One is about the definition of marriage, plain and simple. If it fails, and homosexual marriage is legalized in Maine, it will have great consequence for society, particularly for those who conscientiously object to this new definition."

The vote will take place in November.
