Bangor Waterfront Gets Ready for the Folk Festival Submitted: 08/26/2009
Bangor - On Friday, the Bangor Waterfront will have a completely different look.

"We're thinking that because of the economy people are going to see even more value to everything that they get at the Folk Festival and make a whole weekend of it," said Heather McCarthy, Executive Director of the American Folk Festival.

To help get things ready, Charleston Correctional Facility sends out three crews of six to set up.

"We have a crew setting up the stage, we're going down to set up the dance tent, and we have another crew down by the Seadog setting up," said Leon Gerry, of the Charleston Correctional Facility.

It's work that benefits both the Folk Festival and the crews from the facility.

"This is good duty. Out here at the waterfront, breeze blowing, off the facility," said Gerry.

The crew from the facility says it's good for them because it gets them off the facility and give them a chance to reconnect with the community.

McCarthy says each year it's the volunteers that make the event happen, and this year there was an overwhelming amount of support.

" We have over 900 volunteers registered for the festival which is very exciting. It is far ahead of where we've ever been in a prior year," said McCarthy.

For the volunteers helping set up the event, they say, it's great to see the finished product.

"You get a little bit of satisfaction out of it knowing that you helped the community."

And the community can enjoy the event starting Friday at 6 pm.
