KNOX and OXFORD COUNTIES - The Sumner man accused of killing two men in West Paris last summer will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Duane Waterman, 33, was sentenced yesterday to serve two concurrent life sentences in jail. Waterman was issued the maximum penalty for the murders of 50-year-old Timothy Mayberry and 43-year-old Todd Smith of West Paris last July. Last month, a jury convicted him of the shootings, which reportedly stemmed from a drug dispute. In addition to the two life sentences, Waterman was ordered to pay $8,000 in funeral expenses to the victims’ families.
Meanwhile, a Hope man will serve 35 years in jail for killing a Waldoboro woman lat summer. Steven Pomeroy, 24, was sentenced yesterday in Knox County Superior Court for the murder of 22-year-old Jessica Nichols. He pleaded guilty to killing her last month. Court documents indicate Pomeroy hit Nichols over the head with a frying pan and stabbed her multiple times because of the way she spoke of his ex-fiancée. He had originally pleaded not guilty to the murder, but changed his plea because he wanted to take responsibility for what he had done.
