Portland, Maine - A lawyer has confirmed a settlement between the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland and his client, a woman who says she was molested by a priest 33 years ago.
The attorney, Mitchell Garabedian of Boston, says the victim was eleven years old at the time. She now lives outside of New England, and says she was molested by the Reverend James Vallely in the rectory of St. Michael's Church in South Berwick. A spokesperson for the diocese says the 200-thousand dollar settlement came from insurance. Spokesperson Sue Bernard says the diocese took action when it received its first complaint about Vallely in 1978. She says at least three others including the victim, said the priest sexually abused them. Garabedian says Vallely, who is now dead, served in several Maine parishes.
