PORTLAND / UMAINE - A former University of Maine student will spend more than a month in jail for his role in the death of a former UMaine soccer player. 20-year-old Sean Meehan was sentenced to 364 days in jail with all but 33 days suspended. The sentence is part of a plea agreement he made with prosecutors. He was charged in the death of 19-year-old Adam Baxter after a night of drinking at Meehan’s parents’ house in November. Meehan was also arrested at the end of March after he was involved in a fight in Orono. His sentence included charges stemming from that incident as well. Upon his release, he will be under probation for three years.

HARRISON - Last August, we reported a fatal boating accident that occurred on Long Lake in Harrison. 55-year-old Terry Raye Trott of Naples and 44-year-old Susanne Groetzinger of Berwick were killed when a 34-foot speedboat, traveling at a high speed, struck their 14-foot boat. Now Groetzinger’s children are seeking damages in a lawsuit against 39-year-old Robert Lapointe of Massachusetts, who police say was driving the speedboat on the night of August 11th. They say Lapointe was intoxicated and operating his boat in a reckless manner when the vessel cut the smaller boat in half. Lapointe has pleaded ‘not guilty’ to seven criminal charges, including two counts of manslaughter. The lawsuit was filed in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Avon - A motorcycle crash in Avon claimed the life of a Phillips man last night. According to the Franklin County sheriff's department, 56 year old John Tooker failed to negotiate a turn on his 2002 Honda motorcycle on route 4 around 9 o'clock Tuesday night. Life Flight was called, but Tooker died at the scene of the accident. A family member was riding another motorcycle behind him at the time of the accident, but that person was not injured. The accident is still under investigation, but initial reports indicate speed was likely a factor.
